I don’t plan on using them for ETTL control, but I do plan on using them to push the sync speed. I’m also a big fan of the smaller form factor. Anyhow, I’ll get into it more once my units get here. In the mean time, here’s that video I was talking about featuring the famous Fong.

Check out these beautifully shot, brilliantly odd videos by cinematographer Marc Ritzema.

The first is a wonderfully dramatic and mysterious piece. It gets my creative juices flowing.

Yes, the second video has the word Jesus is in the song, but that’s not what I mean when I say inspirational. I’m talking about the ideas and imagery in the film. It actually has nothing to do with that bearded guy who has a predilection for robes.

I just watched the following video and have to say I think it is possibly the most inspiring work I’ve seen in years. Not the content, as interesting as it is, so much as the achievement. Sometimes I get an idea and I hem and haw about it because of the amount of work involved in getting the props or actors together to make it happen. And here, Blu has created this tomb, a massive investment of energy and time.

I would classify this as Meta Art. Though the surreal images, gruesome at times, are interesting, what effects me as it unfolds is imagining it being created, the world happening around the creation. I love that they photograph so much of the surrounding area and include several images where people are walking by.

Motu makes me want to get off my ass and go make art.

Here is a video I really enjoyed made by Gabor Tarnok that shows the emotional power of using a short depth of field. The spectacular part is that despite what your eyes are telling you, this was not shot with some $100,000 film or digital high def camera. It was shot with a $750 Canon HV20 and an SGPro 35mm DOF adapter. A brief description of a DOF adapter: It lets your small sensor video camera focus on the film plane of a wide aperture lens that is attached in front of it. This lets your camera that would otherwise only have a very deep depth of field have a much shallower one. If there is interest I’ll go into this further in another post. For now… enjoy Gabor’s video.

I don’t know about you, but watching this video made me feel like I was back in time when I was a kid (I swear I was a kid once, just ask me mum!).

Using a short depth of field along with Gabor’s skilled photographic eye, and a well picked audio track, Mr. Tarnok has taken a home video of his children and made it into a piece of art.

Agree? Disagree? Let me know in the comments below.

You can see it in full screen HD over on Vimeo. Just click “At Home” above.

I will be writing an in depth article on using Depth of Field soon. In the meantime I’ve mentioned Depth of Field in these two articles if you’d like to know more.
