I really don’t do this enough in my opinion. So here you goes, links to blog posts from around the web that I’ve read recently and found interesting.

Prolost tells it like it is. Just because your fancy new DSLR may shoot video doesn’t mean you have to. And just when are the companies going to let us give them our money?

Fine art photographer Chris Anthony has a gallery opening this Saturday (03-28-09) in Los Angeles and I hope to make it. His work is haunting and interesting. Some of his past work is bit heavy on the photoshop, but still very nice! This series looks to be even more my taste than his other works. If anyone else is going, let me know and we’ll try to meet up.

Canon has a new itty-bitty flash that I plan on adding to my G9 setup as soon as I can get my hands on it. Sure, it’s not perfect, but it might look a little less obscene than when I’ve got a 580exII towering over the little fella. Also, total speculation, but my psychic powers are telling me this flash is really being made to support a new, yet to be announced aps-c size sensor compact camera from Canon. Why thinky that? Two words, okay, numbers 28 50.

From the Make blog comes a DIY Photo Booth that I would love to build one day.

I wasn’t going to post this because it probably won’t interest a single one of you, but I’m going to put it up and you can just chose not to watch it. It’s a video of my son saying his first words when he was 12 weeks old (about 2 months ago). He’s just so dang cute. But all dads think their baby is cute, right? There is nothing artsy about the video. It is shot with the 5DMII but the color balance is all poopy and it looks like doo doo. What? I said it won’t interest you. Don’t click on the link. Nothing to see here. Move along please.

Nice!

If this guy Kevin is as good at building photography equipment as he is at building anticipation, we are in for a world made out of ice cream cake!

Radio Popper have officially opened the first round of pre-ordering. I am lucky enough to be on the pre-order list. A few days ago I got the magic invitation, rushed over to the site and placed my order. Apparently I’m order #15. I will most definitely be posting a review when I get them. When will I get them? There is a tentative date of April 7th, so possibly two days later.

I’ve never been real good at waiting for photography equipment and waiting for this piece of photo gear is especially taxing (see the reasons I’m so excited about what how these are going to help with my photography in this post). So now I wait.

It’s like I showed up at a party. I spot the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. I’m nervous, but I try to make my way closer. Maybe she’s not so great, I tell myself to calm my nerves. But the closer I get, the better she looks. I try to get closer still. It’s taking forever. A whiff of her perfume. She smells like chocolate! I can’t stand it. I work my way through the crowd. I try not to push, but these people won’t get out of my way. I step over my friends, crushing their necks beneath my feet. I apologize, but they don’t care, they know she’s the one I’ve been looking for. I can almost touch her. Oh, what a smile! I hear her voice. Confident, but funny. She has a great sense of humor, too! Wait, if I can hear her, she can hear me. With the most important words I have ever spoken I call out to her: “I’ll take one transmitter and three receivers. Overnight delivery!”

Kevin from Radiopopper commented about the above post (I posted it on his blog):

ROTFL!!! Everyone, let me introduce you to Zeke K. He’s awesome. If you haven’t checked out his work, you should. He really is “out of the box”. I’ve never met Zeke, but I totally look forward to the opportunity. He appears to be a bit of a flash master to top it all off. Check him out at zekek.com. He’s no doubt somewhere high up on my list of “photographer heros”. Thanks for the contribution Zeke. You rock.

–

No, Kevin, you rock! Now stop replying to posts and get back to soldering!

Today over at strobist.com, Mr. Hobby himself got to play with my new girlfriend – don’t tell the wife.

Though we are still a few weeks out from the official release, strobist got a sneak peek at the (fingers crossed) magnif-i-ta-rifical Radiopopper! David Hobby sounds excited by the radio poppers ability to enable high speed syncing at distance, “Think telephoto portraits shot wide open at 1/4000th of a sec to blow out the background focus — yet still lit with a nearby flash, for instance. This means you could shoot outdoor portraits with your flattering tele at noon on a sunny day with both controlled light and a nice, soft background.”

If you don’t know those words in that combination mean, you are the last person on Earth who isn’t a regular reader of the strobist.com blog-a-rama. What’cha waiting for? Get over there, you’ve got a lot of catching up to do!

Back to the radiopopper -

Though I can’t see straight I’m so excited about the high speed sync at a distance feature – that alone is worth the cash, I’m, as American Idol’s Randy Jackson says, “a million billion percent” more jazzed at the ability to control my 580ex II flashes right from my camera.

Am I lazy? Sure I am, but it’s more of a creative work flow thing. Sometimes I’ll have a flash mounted to a stand 15 feet in the air, tucked inside a softbox, or I’ll have a flash inside a custom waterproof housing (ziplock bag), or maybe the flash is inside a private jet barnstorming my abode (okay, haven’t done that one yet), and to be able to shoot, evaluate, and change the manual power output without having to tear down and reset my light setup is going to be a mega-boon to my aunt flow. If you know what I mean.

Here’s the specs from the radio popper site:

Specs

Size: approx 2.6 x 2.0 x 0.75 inch

Weight: approx 3 oz.

Power: one “AA” size battery

Batt Life: 20+ hours, continual operation

Range: 300+ ft. real world

Antenna: user replaceable flexible – approx 4.5 inches

Light Sensor: user replaceable fiber-optic tube

Mounting: double side tape, hook & latch

Proj Release Date: february 2008

Price: $175 per Tx / Rx – $349 complete ‘ready to shoot’ kit

Discounts: additional discounts for larger quantities

Read ‘em and weep – with joy, that is.

(Full review to follow once I get my sweaty fingers on a couple sets of these pretty, pretty ladies!)

Kisses, radiopopper, I think I love you.
