Nice Photo of the Week - Know Your Job
May 19th, 2008 | By Mr.K | Category: Photo of the Week
The Idea:
Know Your Job is all about two things: the sign in the back which establishes the expectation - starting the story, and the acting which works to show the outcome of what happens to someone who doesn’t know their job. It’s aggressive, dark, angry, but I hope some people find it funny. I think it creates a story, or at least a scene that will make the viewer see more frames than are shown to them. At least I hope it does.
I wanted the light to cast the face in shadow to make the model look more menacing. I used a slow shutter to catch the action of the fist to intensify the violence of the action.
Hopefully there are enough elements that the viewer can read into the image if they want and find a deeper meaning. But if all they do is look at it for more than a few seconds and wonder, that’s okay with me, too.
The Tech:
“Know Your Job” was taken with a Canon 5D and the 24-105 L at f11 1/30 sec. I underexposed the ambient and brought up the subject with two off camera flashes. Here is a photograph of the lighting setup:

Cracking shot, his fist must have been moving pretty fast to get the blur, great effect!
It works stupendously. It forces one to wonder at what the protagonist is lashing out as well as wondering at the outcome. And the danger sign adds a humorous touch. It’s a perfect example (IMO) of how powerful a still image can be when compared to a movie. Well done.
