Nice Photo of the Week – Laundry Day

The Idea:
“Laundry Day” is one of my favorite images from 2007. Maybe my favorite-est. For me it’s one of those images that are difficult to get out of your head. I hope it’s that way for others as well. This week I don’t really want to say too much about my idea behind the image as I prefer people explore it and come to their own conclusion. Instead I’ll just say the title is as important to me in forming the back story as the image. I feel the title is an absolute essential part of the puzzle that I hope the viewer will want to solve. If you have the time and the desire, I’d love to hear what the image says to you. If we get ten legitimate comments of what the image says to you folks, I’ll post an update with a specific description of my intended meaning/story.
The Tech:
“Laundry Day” was taken with a Canon 5D and the 24-105 L at f13 1/125 sec. 100 iso. It was shot in April around 5:30. It was golden hour, or just approaching it. I found the background I liked. In fact, with the clouds it was hard to find a background I didn’t like. That let me adjust the clothing line to get the gloves lit in a way where you could see them, but still have them sculpted by the sun light. It is lit just with the sunlight – hence no lighting diagram on this one. No bounce. No strobes. Oh, I had the strobes with me. In fact, it’s the light stands that I tied the clothing line to just out of frame. But with the sun and the background cooperating to give me just what I was looking for there was just no reason to manually light this set up.

I love this pic. It makes me think of “Cat Burglar’s Day Off” or “Superhero’s Laundry Day”
It’s more like the whole family is Cat Burglars. There’s a mommy, a daddy and a baby mask.
Or else maybe Zorro is standing just outside the frame wearing that last, worn out mask that always hangs out at the bottom of the drawer, and he’s hanging up the cape because otherwise he won’t be able to fight injustice tomorrow.
On a daily basis, everyone wears a mask at some time, and often we have to treat people with kid gloves. The masks and kid gloves keep us from being who we really are, therefore there are clouds in our lives. But there are family and friends who know who we are under the mask, and they don’t need to treated with kid gloves, and they are our blue skies.
“Hanging your dirty washing on the line” or letting your secrets out for everyone to see?
