Nice Photo of the Week – Mom in the Mirror

mominthemirror1

The Idea:

I set out with “Mom in the Mirror” to tell the story of young woman who for a moment instead of seeing herself in her reflection sees how much she looks like her mother. I think this is something most people experience at some time in their life. It can be comforting or scary, or both at the same time. And our parents probably experienced the same thing when one day they looked in the mirror and saw a bit of their parents. Growing up can be hard, but the alternative is worse. So I set out to capture that exact moment of seeing one’s parent’s look in yourself for the first time just before the flood of emotions that it brings. What I hadn’t set out to do, but feel is also captured is the emotion of the mother seeing her younger self in her daughter, or seeing her daughter as a toddler despite how old she has grown. I try to create images that grow deeper the longer you look at them, hopefully this is one of those images. It is for me.

The Tech:

“Mom in the Mirror” was taken with a Canon 5D and the 24-105 L at f9 1/50 sec. 100 iso. I had the mother and daughter stand in a way that the reflection worked as I prefer not to do composites. It can be tricky getting the emotion you want out of two models at the same time, but I feel the reward is worth it. I used one 580 flash bounced into an umbrella to light both the models as you can see here in the inadequate lighting diagram:
