Nice Photo of the Week - Preparing to Fly
Aug 4th, 2008 | By Mr.K | Category: Photo of the Week - ok, Month
The Idea:
“Preparing to Fly” is an attempt to capture a moment lost in time. The character is introspective. He is dressed for flight. He is confident, but nervous. The flight will be dangerous, but freeing. Behind him is a block wall and he must move forward into the unknown. He takes this moment to himself and the moment stretches out almost to infinity as he prepares to fly. At least that’s the idea. I underexposed the ambient and lit the model with a somewhat unnaturally large (for the situation) soft light to try and remove the model from reality and help the viewer feel more like they were sharing his inner moment. Did it work? You tell me.
The Tech:
“Preparing to Fly” was taken with a Canon 5D and the 24-105 L at f16 1/160 sec. 50 iso. The sun was coming in high camera left. I blasted a 580ex through an umbrella close and camera right. Nice and simple. The wind wasn’t playing along, so I tossed the scarf into the air just before snapping the shot. Here is a Nice diagram of the lighting setup:

It didn’t work for me. It appears that he’s closing his eyes because of bright light source, instead of meditating in the moment. Not necessarily flash, but something artificial.
I think part of the problem is the background. The wall may be an effective symbol in a different composition, but the big shadow to the left, the wood thing (is that a roof corner?) to the right, and telephone/electric pole squash the idea of him being a vintage aviator. It just reads as a guy in an aviator costume, perhaps standing in front of a fan.
I’m not too sure but it didnt work too well for me
The reason prolly lies in the expression he makes
his eyes are closed (most importantly I think they should be open for the viewer to look through his eyes and see whats on his mind) and then his facial expression … kinda looks as if he just ate something strange and is now trying to get it out between his teeth … just playin the little sarcasmn line there ;>
to get back .. I think ideal in my understanding would be him looking out of the frame into the unknown (which the viewer can hopefully imagine very well) with a somewhat serious look that is showing that he’s calculating his chances to survive
