Canon Issues Gag Order To Nice Photo Mag!

The World's First Computer

Just a few days ago I innocently made an off the cuff prediction about Canon releasing a large sensor compact digital camera. You don’t have to be a psychic to make that leap. Eventually they’ll have to put one out, right? But who knew when? Well, I think I now have a pretty good idea.

I saw the release of the little 270ex speedlite as a sign of the immanent release of said camera. Why? I gave a hint: “28, 50″. The flash head has two “zoom” positions 28mm and 50mm. I didn’t say it at the time, but I figured this new APS-C sensor compact would have not a continuous zoom, but rather a three step zoom like some of the great old rangefinder camera lenses. I was thinking 28mm, 50mm, and maybe a 90mm (all sizes equivalent to a full 35mm frame). The new entry level canon DSLR is using the same sensor (supposedly) as the 50D so that makes room for the old Rebel sensor to be put in a compact camera. They didn’t build that new CMOS factory for nothin’.

I don’t have any inside knowledge, no access to internal documents, or trade secrets. But it seems Canon thinks otherwise.

I was sent a rather rude letter telling me (not asking) to remove “any and all mentions” of a Canon large sensor compact from Nicephotomag “until July 1st” and demanding I reveal my source.

Now, if they had asked nice, who knows? But they didn’t so I sent them an email that went something like: “Let me see some deets, like the actual dimensions or something juicy, loan me a review unit so I can post a review when it’s released, and I’ll pull the comment and keep mum until the official announcement.”

No reply.

Hmm. So, maybe it’s not nice, maybe I just should have pulled it like they ordered me, but I don’t like to be pushed around. So instead I’m going to say that my speculation must have been right or why would they play the bully game?

My new prediction: Canon will announce a large sensor compact within the next 90 days. Otherwise why write that I need to pull it until July 1st? Yeah, it’ll probably shoot HD video, too at 24 frames per second but at 1020p (instead of 1080) and in some codec that can only be edited on an Analytical Engine. But it’ll have a nice shallow depth of field, right?

Nice!

UPDATE: Yes, this was just an April Fools Day Joke. I hope people enjoyed it. The truth is I really do think Canon will come out with an APS-C size sensor compact camera very soon. I think that because of the new little flash that just came out and because they must know people would buy them up like hot cakes. Anyway, I hope I didn’t get anyone upset and even more I hope Canon comes out with this imaginary camera soon. That would be Nice!
