DSLR with Movie Mode vs. Video Camera
The prolific Mr. Michael H. Reichmann over at Luminous Landscape has an interesting post about the differences between using a DSLR with movie mode for shooting video vs. a dedicated video camera.
I’m not sure I agree with all the broad strokes of the post, but the details sound about right. If you’ve been thinking about making the leap from still photographer to film maker, even if it’s just to dabble, I think it could be worth you taking a look.
For the kind of films I make and will be making, I know what my opinion is. The winner? 5DmII.
Nice!

Zeke,
Michael is dead on in his detailed analysis of DSLR’s for “movie making”.
His point are often overlooked by indies who are hell bent on working with working on the “bleeding edge” at any cost even if it means their own sanity is at stake.
James Van Horn.
Hi James,
I’m not so sure we’re interested in working on the bleeding edge. And definitely not interested in doing anything at any cost as cost is often the most limiting factor in an indi production.
For my films I’m interested in delivering the message I want to deliver as effectively as I can even if that means I have to work harder and use gear that drives me nuts. All I’m concerned with is what the audience experiences. They don’t know (or care, most likely) if it was a pain in the ass to put it up on the screen or a breeze.
That’s my opinion for what it’s worth.
Nice!
