Hunting For Food When Up From the Ground Came Bubblin Crude

Crewdson that is. Gregory Crewdson. It’s no secret Mr. Crewdson is one of my all time favorite photographers. And though I’ve dreamt of seeing his huge images in person, that luxury has not crossed my path yet. So instead I sniff the pages from inches away as I hunt through the detail of the images in books like Twilight and lust after his large format (16×12 inch) Beneath The Roses. Every time I looked for this book it was either unavailable or cost around $120 used. Arge! So I waited. Then one day I walked into a used bookstore around the corner from my chiropractor (thanks heavy camera bags!) and found Beneath The Roses in perfect condition for only $30! Oh, the joy! I danced around like pickle in deep fryer.
This used bookstore actually had a huge selection of killer photo books. The prices rocked. There was actually a real live human - or clever robot - that had knowledge and answered questions that I said out loud. I didn’t have to type them into anything. I snatched up enough to need another adjustment at the chiro.
Of course, now that I go look up the book on Amazon to glote like an a-hole about how much it’s running for used, I see it is back in print and available for under $40. Hmm. Should I still post this article? Heck yes! Will I look like a fool? Never stopped me before! Okay, so I didn’t save a ton of cash over what I could get it for now, but I got to look at, actually thumb through a wall of photo books. I haven’t done that in far too long. If you haven’t been to a used bookstore in a while, call around, find one that has a nice selection of photo books and get in there. I found quite a bit of inspiration on the shelves between the diet books, sci-fi paperbacks, and underneath the owner’s cat, Merlin. Maybe you can, too.
Sick of Crewdson? Got someone you think I’ll like better? Let me know in the comments below.
Nice!

Crewdson had an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert museum last year. It was better than you could ever imagine, The prints were huge and awe inspiring. But no need to be jealous, you got the book right?
John - nice recommendation. Interesting stuff.
Paulo - ARGGG! One of these days I’ll get to see one of his shows. Until then, I dream…
