Weekend Inspiration – Comedy

Ah, comedy. You’re so funny. You and your pal Laughter make such a nice team. They say laughter is the fruit juice of the gods. Other than my neighbor Danny, who doesn’t like to laugh?

The only thing I like more than laughing is making other people laugh. You? You’d rather laugh than make someone laugh? You selfish bastard! Get out there and make someone laugh. You never tried to take a photo that would make someone laugh? What are you, a monster?

Making people cry, that easy. Just spend all of high school leading them on, holding their heart in your hand, caressing it like a puppy, crying on their shoulder, wearing short cheerleader outfits and calling them sweetie, and touching their hand when you giggle. Then when they finally get the nerve to tell you they love you, spit out the words, “I love you, too. Just not like that.” Then turn and start making out with some random dick head with a mustache who drives a van with a wizard airbrushed on the side.

Now making someone laugh, that’s a bit trickier. But tricky is good. That’s how you grow.

That’s right. I want you to be funny. Figure out an image that might make someone laugh, or giggle, or at least think, “Eh, I could see how someone might think that was comical.” Then go take that image.

This doesn’t have to be high art. You can set it up, or you can find something that might be funny and help push it over the edge into Giggle Valley.

shark_sightingFor this image I saw the sign and that people were still using the beach, so I set up shop and waited until some folks walked by. Result, a mildly comical image. Hooray! Success!

Remember, most comedy is story telling. It’s tough to tell a story in just one still image. But it’s great practice in your mission to become the world’s greatest photographer who has ever or will ever live. So warm up that trigger finger muscle, but first, warm up that brain muscle. Think it through, then get out there and be ready to let the funny happen.

Feel free to post your results in the Nice Flickr pool. Or you can put a link in the comments below. Come on, someone make me laugh already.

Nice!

  1. I have a couple I consider mildly amusing. In the first photo I was actually trying to get a shot of my b&w photo hanging on the gallery wall. I’m not sure if I was conscious of the human/dinosaur interaction at the time.
With the second photo I was bored and had toys and magnolia blossoms laying around.

  2. Nice Tony! I got a genuine giggle out of the dino image!
