Weekend Inspiration – Smile

This weekend, no matter how much snow or rain you have beating down on you, how cold it is, if you’ve just lost your job, or your pet tarantula ran away, I want you to smile. Or if you can’t do it, find someone who can.

That’s right. I want you to take a photo of yourself, or someone else smiling.

Now, if the idea of smiling sounds really hard to you, stop there. Just take a strait, old, boring picture of a smiling person. If it sounds hard just to smile, I don’t want to push you over the edge. But if smiling just sounds a touch annoying to you, or perhaps even pleasurable, then let’s turn up the heat.

Take an interesting photo of someone smiling.

As we’ve talked about many, many times, there is an infinite number of ways to make a photo interesting. You can do it graphically – like finding a cool looking spot with lots of geometric shadows or shapes or something (yawn). However, I find emotionally interesting approaches more intriguing. Use a story. If a gentleman is smiling while he pets a dog, that’s nice and everything. But if he is smiling while the dog tears a pillow to shreds in an otherwise immaculately kept living room while his grandmother looks on horrified – that, to me, is more interesting.

It doesn’t have to be elaborate. It doesn’t have to be funny or weird – though it can be. You don’t even have to plan it out in advance if you don’t want to. Just get out there and do it. If you really can’t manage a smile, remember you can always say, “Cheese!”

  1. I love this idea. So simple.

  2. this would be a simple way to engage strangers too. i’m going to have to try this on the streets, just telling people to say “cheese”!
